Columbus Day

Day 1013 - October 10, 2011

the plan was a 10 mile trail run today. On my way to the trails, I decided to add some roads and would park a mile or so from the trail head and bump my mileage up to 12. I ended up parking farther away than I thought, and as I was running to the trails got the idea to extend the run out to 14.92 miles - you know, in honor of the more infamous Chris. Yes, I'm pretty sure that moves me up a few notches on the dork scale.

Anyway, the run ended up being exactly 14.92 miles and I finished in just under 2:13.

To make this even more ridiculous, I noticed on my Garmin that I had started the run at 10:10 am on October 10th.

I think I need to go back to work, I've got too much time on my hands this weekend.

Dancing with Snakes

Day 1012 - October 9, 2011

Did the snake dance today - you know the one where you realize you are about to step on a copperhead and somehow throw yourself to the side, manage to stay upright, and keep running. I think it was dead, but I didn't go back to check it out. Dog bites are bad enough- don't need to add venomous snakes to the list.

Sick and still running

Day 1011 - October 8, 2011

Kept the streak going today despite a nasty cold - the run was actually the best I felt all day.

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Two more miles

Day 1002 - September 29, 2011

Just couple of miles - keeping the streak alive. On saturday I'm running the Warrior Dash - should be fun.

Goal - ACCOMPLISHED

DAY 1000 - September 27, 2011

It is kind of surreal to think that on January 1, 2009, I took the first step toward where I am today. I want to thank everyone who supported me along the way. My family who adjusted their schedules many times so I could have time to get in a run, my friends who joined me for many of the miles, and everyone who dropped me a comment or word of encouragement online.

For now, I'll continue to run everyday - probably until I forget to do it someday. It has become habit and as long as I continue to enjoy it - why not keep going.

For anyone who is curious, here are some of the statistics from the last 1000 days:

Total mile: 4253

Day 999 - going to boston

Day 999 - September 26, 2011

Today was like Christmas eve. All the anticipation of tomorrow's big run...and an early gift. Today I received confirmation that my 2012 Boston marathon registration was accepted. I can't believe it. What an awesome way to get to the 1000th day.

Today's run was out at Chris Greene Lake. 6.25 miles.

Pouring RAIN

Day 998 - September 25, 2011

Something different each day as I approach day 1000. Today was rain - and lots of it. While I waited for the wide to return and take over kid duty, I jumped on the treadmill and got in 2 miles. I figured I would then go out and run 4 outside, then come back and finish up on the treadmill. At the time, it was just a light drizzle and I figured I wouldn't get that wet. WRONG. It dumped on me. Once I was soaked, there was no reason to head back in for the mill, so I added on 4 miles and got in 10 today. Good stuff. 19 miles short of 1000 for the year.

Three days to 1000

Day 997 - September 24, 2011

Today was a treadmill day to get the run in - may try and go back out later, but not going to hold my breath on that one. Still have a shot at 1000 miles for the year by Tuesday, but I'll have to commit to a long run.

Friday, September 23, 2011

Good News!

Day 996 - September 23, 2011

Dr. says I don't need the rabies vaccine unless the dog becomes symptomatic. Keeping fingers crossed.

Ran a very careful 4 miles tonight! Looking for self defense options for future runs...anyone have ideas?

5 days to go

Day 995 - September 22, 2011

Ran four miles with friends tonight. Didn't want to run alone after yesterday. Learned today that the dog's shots are out of date. This sucks.

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

I'm starting to hate dogs

Day 994 - September 21, 2011

I can't believe I got attacked again. Tonight it was a large (100+ pound) pit bull. Came running out of no where and nailed me on the left leg. I thought this one was going to end very badly. Fortunately, it let go quickly. It started to come back, and I thought I was done. I braced myself for the attack and it backed down. Neighbors from all the houses came out from all the yelling and the dog ran off.

I can't even imagine if I had been a kid. That dog would have killed them. I don't understand why anyone would keep an aggressive dog.

6 Days to go. :(

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

One week to go

Day 993 - September 20, 2011

The final week is here! Today was three miles on the treadmill. The goal is to completely over do it and see if I can get to 1000 miles for the year on the day I get to 1000 days. I need 42 miles :) Totally in reach!

Day 990 - What!!!

September 17, 2011 - Day 990

Ten days to go.....this is unbelievable to me. 1000 days is about to become a reality.

Tonight was a very cool fall evening. Humidity was down and despite being very tired from a busy Saturday, I felt pretty good. The deer were out taking advantage of the cool night as well. We had 7 doe in the back yard as I was getting ready to go. I then saw three more buck during the run....something I would have missed if I had not been out there logging another day.

I have to say that the run streak is getting pretty cool being this close to 1000. Looking forward to the next 10 days.

Congratulations Perry

August 14, 2011

If you get a chance today, head over to Just your Average Joggler where Perry will be celebrating his 1000th consecutive day of joggling. Congrats Perry - well done.

I will not limp to the finish

Day 942 - July 31, 2011

I'm really disappointed with my running lately. I have failed to reach 100 miles in each of the last three months and I am progressively getting slower - at least 30 seconds a mile worse than this point last year. I'm also at least 15 pounds heavier than I want to be. It is time for a change. Limping through the last 58 days until I reach 1000 is not acceptable.

So, that will be my motivation. Tomorrow, on August 1, I post the before photo. Then I'm going to bust my ass for the next 58 days and see where I get. On September 27, I'll post the after. In August, I plan to log at least 125 miles and drop 10 pounds. Let's see if I can get this thing back on track.

Day 928

Day 928 - July 17, 2011

Just another ordinary day, but one day closer to 1000.

Monday, July 4, 2011

And you think a running streak is tough...

How about a mile and a beer everyday? That's what Tim Cigelske is doing. He's over 9 months into his streak and to make it interesting, two days ago he ran a beer mile. Yep, for those who running an interval just isn't enough, try chugging a 12 oz beer each lap. And be sure to do it without puking or else you need to run a 5th lap. That's crazy. And just to prove he wasn't taking this lightly, Tim cranked out a personal best 6:31 - that includes the drinking time. Way to go Mr. BeerRunner - we salute you.

The beer runner was also featured in Wired. You can check out the full article here.

Happy 4th of July

Day 915 - July 4th, 2011

What a great day. The entire family headed out for the annual 4th of July 5K bright and early at 6:20am. I've run this race every year we are in town, but it was the first full 5K for my daughters. They decided they would start with their mom and depending on how everyone was doing, separate and regather at the finish. I would then double back at the end of the race and run in with whoever was up front.

I had a great race and felt strong the entire way. I think I'm getting my racing legs back. I finished in a solid 19:35, almost a minute faster than a 5K I did a month ago. I quickly gathered my breath and started slowly jogging back to see which of my girls was up front. To no surprise, my 8 year old was only about 3/4 of a mile from the finish when I found her. She was chugging along and I really enjoyed cheering her on to the finish. She even passed another kid in her age group in the last half mile to take second place in the 10 and under group. She was absolutely beaming when she went up to claim her prize.

My 10 year old also did very well. Not being as competitive as her sister, she was happy to finish and still managed a respectable sub 40 min race with her mom. So proud of all three of them.

Today was probably one of the best days of the streak so far. Definitely one to keep me going.

85 days till 1000.

99 days to go

Day 901 - June 20, 2011

Wow - I can't believe it - over 90% of the way to 1000. Yesterday I celebrated Father's day with my 900th day of the streak and ran The Charlottesville Men's 4 Miler. It was disgustingly humid, but I managed a decent time, 26:10, and finished third in my age group.

Three months till 1000.

Thursday, June 9, 2011

It was hot

Day 890

Getting closer to 900 - only 10 days to go. Three miles tonight - very slow.

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

Day 888

Wow - its been awhile. The running has been slow and short, but the streak is alive. I ran the Vermont City Marathon a week ago. those twenty six miles were thhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gife majority of the 86 I ran in May. Hoping I can finish the next 112 days strong and maybe even post here once in awhile. I'm still logging my runs at Daily Mile. I'm ceruns over there. Drop me a friend request.

Hope everyone has a great summer.

Pain free run outside

Day 813 - March 24, 2010

Happy to report that I ran outside today with no pain. Four miles, no problems. Really looking forward to getting back to regular training. I am supposed to race this weekend, but I think I will just use the race as a training run. It will be good to get back outdoors.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

still running

Day 812 - March 23, 2011

Knee is still fine on the treadmill, but not so good on the stairs. Better than Sunday, but still not ready to try outside. Maybe tomorrow.

Running hurt

Day 809 - March 20, 2011

What a 24 hours. This weekend was full of family fun. Saturday night, I tried to sneak in two miles on the treadmill when I had the chance. Everything was going fine, then wham, I was flying through the air backwards. I managed to stick a one point landing, but tweaked my left knee pretty good. At first, I didn't think it was that bad. I got back on the treadmill and finished the 2 miles. It hurt, but I was able to maintain pace.

Today was a different story. I can't walk up or down stairs without pain behind my kneecap. I'm fine on the flat, but stairs kill me.

Dilemma: give up on the streak and rest the knee or test it out on the treadmill. I know, even as I type this I realize how dumb this sounds. But, I'm dumb. I went down to the treadmill, you know, where I got hurt yesterday, and climbed on. I slowly ramped the speed up from walking, to a slow jog, to actual running. NO PAIN!!!

I couldn't believe it. As long as the track was smooth I felt perfectly fine. I knocked out 4 miles in 32 minutes, and that included the slow start.

Leaving the gym I was feeling great - until I got to the last 4 stairs. I couldn't believe the pain on those few steps. Walked the rest of the way back to my room and was fine.

I have no idea what this means for my knee, but I guess I'll be on the treadmill until I can get up and down some steps. Keeping my fingers crossed it will only be a day or two.

Rain, Rain, and more rain

Day 795 - March 6, 2011

Wow it is raining hard today. I thought about trying to wait it out, but I gave up and just went. I was drenched by the first mile and ran through ankle deep water at 2 miles.

My lower back has been really tight since I ran long yesterday. Hoping it loosens up later today.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

@$#%@$ wind

March 2, 2011 - Day 791

Still plugging along. Tried a track workout today, but the wind was terrible. My 800 times were worse. Ready to get back home where the wind doesn't blow so much.

Monday, February 21, 2011

I'm that blogger

Day 782 - February 21, 2011

I'm turning into that running blogger who never actually writes anything anymore. I've kept the streak going and I'm having a better start to 2011 than I did in 2010. I just checked and I'm 44 miles ahead of last year at this time.

But, I'm probably behind on my marathon training for May and I need to get it in gear. With the new Boston registration process, I need to have a good race and try and lower my qualification time if I want to have any chance of getting in. For the record, I applaud the BAA for changing the process and making it all about the times. I've always felt that Boston should be for the fastest marathoners, and not for the fastest registers. This will sound very unPC, but if they'd get rid of the fund raisers who don't have to meet the qualifying standards, I'd be even happier. There are plenty of other marathons out there for people who want to run a marathon or raise some money.

Back to the original topic...I will try and do a better job of updating here, but if you really want to see how my training is going, check out my profile at the Dailymile. It is a great site for logging your workouts. If you are already a member there, send me a friend request and if you aren't, you should consider joining. We all need another social media site to follow - right?!?!

Time for another marathon

Day 746 - January 16, 2011

Man, I can't believe how hard its been for me to find the time to write this year.

Anyway, I'm still here and still running everyday. I'm actually getting more miles in than I did last January. Yesterday I ran with a group and we put in 10 miles.

Today, I signed up for the Vermont Cities Marathon in Burlington, VT. I've got 133 days to get ready, plenty of time.

Vermont will be much smaller than Marine Corps, less than 4000 entrants vs. 30,000+. That should cut down on the pre and post race chaos.

I'm really excited about taking another shot at breaking 3 hours. Hopefully I can use my experience at Marine Corps to take that final 11:32 off my time.

I'll try and keep you posted.
